The outbreak of COVID-19 throughout the world and throughout this Commonwealth is a tremendous public health risk. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 reached Montgomery County in early March, Todd has been in constant communication with state and local healthcare officials to determine how to best protect the residents of the 151st District along with every Pennsylvanian. Because of the swift action by our state and local governments, our region has flattened the curve in southeastern Pennsylvania while many places throughout the country continue to struggle. Todd believes we must continue to do all that we can to contain the virus, including wearing masks while in public spaces, maintaining social distance, and robust testing to understand how the virus is spreading throughout our community.
Todd continues to put his constituents’ health and safety first. When the legislature tried to Reopen Pennsylvania in April while cases of COVID-19 continued to rise, Todd stood up to his party leaders and opposed the measure. In response to the outbreak of the virus in nursing homes, Todd introduced legislation to require the Pennsylvania or County Department of Health to publish the number of COVID-19 cases in each long-term care facility in the state along with their protocols for isolating positive cases. He also introduced legislation requiring the Department of Health to ensure all employees and residents in long-term care facilities are tested for COVID-19.
The economic impact of the pandemic is causing a great deal of pain to our local economy. Once we “flattened the curve” and knew our healthcare systems would not be overrun, Todd urged the Governor to use a targeted, data-driven and evidence-based approach founded on science to open up Pennsylvania’s economy while protecting our most vulnerable citizens. In response to record unemployment numbers and struggling small businesses, Todd introduced legislation to create the Small Business Restaurant Grant Program to assist restaurants impacted by the virus. This program would dedicate $250 million in vital assistance to restaurants throughout Pennsylvania. Todd also is sponsoring legislation to help property taxpayers during these difficult times by extending the discounted period to pay school taxes.
COVID-19 has created many difficult challenges nation-wide and here at home. Todd is committed to ensuring his community has the resources it needs to handle the medical impacts of the virus along with the support to bring our economy back better than ever.
